BAHAMAS

The Bahamas

The gateway to blue water sailing at its best! The Islands of the Bahamas are located in the Atlantic Ocean just 50 miles off the coast of Florida. The Bahamas archipelago is comprised of over 700 islands, rocks and cays. The northern islands are subtropical, with rainy and hot summers while winters are drier and warm. The southern islands are tropical, with warmth all year round. Bahamas means “shallow water” in old Spanish. Shallow coastal water means scenic beaches and is a perfect mix for water based activities. However, the shallow coastline means boats with deep draughts cannot easily navigate the area. The solution is to visit via a sailing yacht! Grand Bahama island is the fourth largest island in the Bahamas island chain. The main airport is located here in the city of Freeport. At the Port Lucaya Marketplace you’ll find over 100 straw vendors and authentic Bahamian craft artisans. Paradise Island is home to the popular Atlantis resort, casino and water park. Here, one can swim with the dolphins or stingrays, explore under the waves on a semi-submarine, chill out on the lazy river or relax at a spa. Two bridges connect Paradise Island to the city of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Typical pastel-colored British colonial architecture abounds. Cruise ships line the harbour. The popular Straw Market can be found in the city centre and contains numerous Bahamian craft stores. Nassau was featured in the James Bond movies Thunderball, Never Say Never Again, Casino Royale and For Your Eyes Only. On Pig Island in the Exuma Cays, live the “Pigs of Paradise” noted in T.R. Todd’s book of the same title. A visit to Pig Beach is not complete without a swim with the pigs. Although, wild, the pigs are very friendly and may even swim over to see you! The Abacos, a 120 mile long boomerang-shaped archipelago is a boating and sailing paradise! The coastlines are scalloped with coves, bays and harbors. Great Abaco Island and Little Abaco are considered the “mainland” and if you’re looking for a downtown scene with all the amenities, check out Marsh Harbour. Enjoy Treasure Cay’s award winning 3.5 mile long powdery white sand beach which kisses the turquoise sea and sets in motion the true relaxed island atmosphere. At the Treasure Cay Beach, Marina and Golf Resort one can partake in a variety of outdoor activities. Kayak, Paddleboard, snorkel, scuba dive, go fishing, or golf at the 18 hole championship golf course.
